About

Tandem, for two trombones, is a virtuosic composition written in 2015 at the request of the Society of Slovene Composers. The piece also includes an optional miniature choreography for the performers and contains a subtle quotation of the Slovene folk song Zeleni Jure. Tandem, for two trombones, is a virtuosic composition written in 2015 at the request of the Society of Slovene Composers. One of the recurring musical elements is microtonal tremolo within glissandi, accompanied by short tones and trills in the second trombone. The piece also includes an optional miniature choreography for the performers and contains a subtle quotation of the Slovene folk song Zeleni Jure. Throughout the work the performers are given opportunities to demonstrate technical agility in very fast passages, including the articulation of harmonic overtones and rapid scalar figures. A shorter, calmer section introduces acoustic modifications of the instruments, resulting in a less conventional mode of performance. While the title may suggest the idea of a “tandem” in both musical and choreographic terms, such an interpretation remains open rather than prescriptive. The composition concludes with an inverted phrase heard at the beginning, ending—metaphorically speaking—with either a full stop or a punctured tire.
