About
Sonata for Solo Violin is a three-movement virtuoso work whose formal design draws on elements of the sonata principle. The exposition of the first movement begins with a calm tonal theme (A), followed by a fast and contrasting theme (B). Instead of appearing strictly in succession, however, the two themes begin to intertwine much earlier, overlapping before they clearly separate. More generally, the sonata form in this work is articulated less through melodic development than through articulation patterns and other technical performance elements. The second movement is slow, built on sustained tones, while the final movement is lively and offers the performer opportunities to display technical virtuosity.
