About
Autumn Fairytales for Zither consists of nine short pieces intended for young zither players. The zither, most commonly found in the Alpine regions of Europe, was once one of the most popular instruments in Slovenia, which is why the majority of Slovene compositions for the instrument are based on folk-like melodies. The present collection of nine “fairytales” was composed in response to a call for newly written zither scores. It fills a gap in the field of didactic and technically less demanding repertoire for the instrument and was written at the suggestion of the Slovene zither player Irena Zdolšek. Nine Fairytales for Zither represents a revised and expanded version of a work composed for the same musician a decade earlier (2004). The individual pieces summarize melodic and characteristic patterns of different musical traditions and are named after them.
