Boj na požiralniku [Battle in the Throat] is an anti-dramatic choral composition built from a collage of Slovene drinking and tavern songs. Sung in a deliberately formal, almost academic choral style, these toasts and convivial melodies reveal how alcohol consumption becomes culturally normalized and ritualized in societies with strong wine traditions. Against this polished surface the work introduces a contrasting, naturalistic layer: solo voices employ extended vocal techniques—gasping, coughing, spitting, and belching—creating a raw sonic counterpoint to the choral texture. The juxtaposition of refined choral singing and bodily vocal sounds evokes an absurd dramatic situation reminiscent of the theatre of the absurd, exposing the uneasy relationship between festive cultural ritual and the social realities associated with alcoholism. The title alludes to the famous story by Prežihov Voranc, but here the “throat” is taken quite literally, referring to the physical sounds and processes of the human body that become part of the musical material.
