Secans, a composition for prepared piano, was commissioned by the Society of Slovene Composers (DSS) for the premiere performance by pianist Miha Haas. The meaning of the Latin title—identical to the name of a trigonometric function—refers to cutting, dividing, operating, akin to an anatomical dissection of tone oscillations or a “surgical procedure on the open piano.” The piano is prepared in such a way that each register produces a different type of sound, allowing for a dimension of polyphonic orchestration to be achieved on a single instrument.
