The first two movements of the four-movement sonata are the neo-Baroque Allemanda and Fugue, while the third and fourth movements, Elegy and Toccata, are composed in a freer style. The original sonata dates from 1935–36, while this arrangement was completed in 2003. In the first and fourth movements the string orchestra is accompanied by harpsichord, and the first movement also features a solo viola. The third movement, Elegy, stands out from the other movements through its romantic lyricism and even recalls the character of film music. For this reason it may be compared with Slavko Osterc’s Religioso for strings, which likewise stands out from his Suite for Strings with its romantically expressive tone and similarly occupies the third movement of a cyclic work.
