About
String Quartet No. 3 was composed at the request of the Society of Slovene Composers and premiered at the concert series Night of Slovene Composers in 2014. The one-movement work revolves around the major triad—the emblematic chord of tonal music. Throughout the piece this chord repeatedly appears and dissolves in different sonic guises. In twentieth-century art music the significance of tonality gradually faded, and the major–minor triad seemed to withdraw from contemporary compositional language. In this quartet the chord is treated almost as a musical character: aging, restless, occasionally intrusive, yet still alive.
The sound world of the piece is shaped by various onomatopoetic gestures. Mechanical patterns reminiscent of urban traffic contrast with more organic sounds, evoking birds and other flying creatures. At times the triad seems to dissolve like an aspirin tablet in a glass of water, losing its former solidity. Yet the work also suggests a certain nostalgia: behind its transformed sonic surfaces the familiar chord still reveals hidden facets, hinting that its expressive potential has not been entirely exhausted.
