About

Wind Quintet No. 3 was premiered by the ensemble Slowind. The single-movement work unfolds through several clearly contrasted sections. The opening part is built from shifting sonic textures in the wind instruments, forming a kind of moving sound fabric that accompanies an aria-like line for the horn. This lyrical passage is abruptly interrupted by three successive loud “beeps,” marking a decisive break in the musical flow.

The second section begins with an apparent polyphony that grows out of the same flexible sound textures. Individual lines become increasingly animated through trills, rapid passages, and accompanying sonic backdrops. The third part of the quintet forms a calmer, evening-like atmosphere in which the thematic material of the instruments occasionally evokes animal calls. The final section continues with an ostinato pattern reminiscent of Morse code, followed by a horn cadenza and imitative echoes in the other wind instruments.
