About
Wind Quintet No. 3 is a single-movement piece is thematically divided into several sections, the most clearly defined being the first, where flowing sound layers intertwine, performed by the wind instruments. This sonic fabric serves as an accompaniment to a horn aria, which abruptly interrupts the first thematic section with three successive loud “blasts.” The second section begins with an illusion of polyphony, also part of the flowing sound textures. Individual voices become more animated through the use of trills and rapid passages, forming an accompanying soundscape. The third part of the quintet is a tranquil evening piece, where the thematic material of the individual instruments resembles animal calls. The musical idea of the final section continues with an ostinato motif in Morse code, a cadenza for solo horn, and an imitative echo in the winds.
